I'm the same - and baffled by it.

Oh yes. Bush & Co. - and their evangelical and fundamentalist constituencies - really believe that hallucinatory John of Patmos crap at the end of the N.T. Worse, they PRAY for it, and we're building permanent bases and lining up our horses on the "final battlefield" even as we speak. I grew up in an evangelical household and just talking about it gave them all stiffies. They'd gather for their Bible studies and dream of "The Day". The First Gulf War - although it raised their hopes - was just a foreshadowing. I think it was Jon Stewart a couple months ago who said (paraphrasing): "George W. Bush campaigned on the theme that he was a uniter, not a divider. It hasn't worked out so well for him. Our country is more divided now than at any time since the Civil War. He has united us on one thing, however. We all now believe in the Apolcalypse."
