in honor of mlk: the social security 'crisis'

Editorial: Social Security/Blacks get more, not less, from it

hmm. makes you wonder, huh? could the fact that people of color benefit more from it be one of the reasons the social security system suddenly needs to be be dismantled? hm? could it??

for once, i'd like my paranoia to be completely without merit.

oh, hey - let's all take a moment to wish mlk a happy birthday. i know i'll be thoughtfully contemplating my brownness for the next few hours.

(Heavy sarcasm): Oh, people of color won't get anything out of social security if we just kill y'all off early by gutting the economy and the health care system and hiking your blood pressure by spouting inanities.

Isn't that Bush's argument? Right up there with wanting to change immigration laws so that more folks can come up from South America to work as gardeners and maids?

He's a friend of the little people, don'tcha know.

From the beginning, our society has relied on a population of people without legal rights to run our kitchens, tend our gardens, harvest our food.

I asked my students once what would happen to the city if suddenly all the undocumented aliens were rounded up and shipped off over night while we were sleeping; what would happen to our economy?

There would be chaos, they said almost defensively, but we'd recover in a matter of months!

I said, fine. So what do you call it when a society's economy leans on a subjugated ethnic population with little to no legal status to do the work they don't want to do?

They pouted and said "sounds like slavery." And then they felt hopeless and dirty.

Speak truth to power!

Actually, come to think of it, we're all gonna get screwed. Then the whole population will die of apoplexy in our 40s and the rich bastards will rule the world!

Guess Bush really is MLK's successor after all. We'll all go down together.
