it is unlikely that i will see Grindhouse. while i liked Kill Bill and love robert rodriguez, the whole 'dirty movie theater experience' nostalgia has left me a little 'meh.' whatever. i mean, i can go to the Village if i wanna know what it's like to sit in gunk and watch trash.
but now that quentin tarantino has created a Rapist action figure, i can feel my 'meh' turning into an 'ick.'

I don't like violent movies - and I have no plans to see Grindhouse - it has looked exceptionally misogynistic to me. However, I decided to read the plot of it on a spoiler page, just to see if my concerns were warranted. In light of V Tech some have noted that Cho's writings were not necessarily signs of impending violence and one ought not be forced into a hospital or kicked out of school for such writing. I think it was the head of Columbia's counseling center who said that one would not lock up Tarentino for his writings ... and after reading the plot of Grindhouse, I must say there is little difference between Tarentino's and Cho's scripts (which I've read) except perhaps Tarentino's are much much more violent.
Yeah, that was pretty much the line of my response to the movie. Whatever, I'll go if Sion wants to, then Nowayyoucan'tmakemethey'renotgettingmy10dollars!
although i think tarantino is totally annoying, i have to admit i've liked a few of his movies. (i think i liked the kill bill movies more than his others because of the swordplay.)
but he generally makes me go 'ick' and the Rapist action figure does nothing to dispel the ick. in fact, it just got ickier. (i won't go as far to say it means the destruction of the world, but it does nothing to slow down our rape culture, either.)
I have despised Tarantino ever since Pulp Fiction. The man is far too fond of using the n-bomb. He is a talentless hack.
bint: yes. that was something i always had to consciously overlook. i think the Kill Bill flicks worked for me because of that distinct lack of hipster guy 'blackness as a signifier of cool' bullshit - instead, we got using japanese anime girls as 'cool' posturing.
i think all this is to say that without tarantino borrowing from either black or japanese pop culture, he ain't cool.
ow that you mention it, it does look like tarantino can't do a damned thing that isn't heavily derivative of something.
i thought about seeing it, but right now i jsut have better things to do with my life. knowing he's decided there should be a rapist action figure makes me more keen to ignore the film altogether.
let's issue tarantino a challenge: make a movie that's NOT derivative of either blaxploitation, anime or 1970s grindhouse.
huh. can't? yeah, thought not.
