Xanadu has some great songs! Xanadu, Magic, Suddenly...
it's hard to decide...showgirls - truly craptacular in its vulgarityxanadu - bizarre 80s movie about a roller skating club with some really bad actingi'm torn.
I'm with JP, Xanadu has songs, AND rollerskates--the stuff of roller-rink fantasy. My sisters and I can't have been the only kids to pretend we were in the movie whenever we were on skates.
the hair, the makeup, the 80s meets the 40s vibe - it's almost too much.and is the humiliation of gene kelly enough to trump the god-awfulness of the 'showgirls' sex scene in the pool?
Xanadu always puts me in mind of Zardoz (because they sound alike), that amazingly bad yet early 70s sci-fi film with Sean Connery walking around in little more than a g-string for much of the story. (He's hairy!) One of the oddest movies I've ever seen. It's worth checking out. As one friend said to me after watching it one afternoon, "You owe me three hours of my life back."Lee
when my dad was going to school for his undergraduate degree, he came home one night totally disgusted.we asked why? why are you so disgusted?we had to watch a really bad movie for class, he said.what was it about, we asked.i have no idea, he said.later that night, when my parents thought i was asleep, i overheard my parents talking about this film, this 'zardoz'. apparently, it had lots of nekkid people and this was the thing that horrified my deacon dad. so i determined that i was going to see what this movie was as soon as i was old enough.i still haven't see it all the way through - but the parts i've seen are totally bizarro, not the least of which is sean connery in his altogethers.
I think both are fantastic. Xanadu has Olivia Newton John (hello! that alone earns points). the pool sex scene in showgirls was out of control. It's so obviously a movie because everyone knows that pool sex isn't great.I think we ALL fake it in a pool.
so miri defends both (X0/SG0)jp likes the songs (X0/SG1)mark clearly detests joe esterhaus (X0/SG2)liza likes nostalgia (X0/SG3)lee throws in a dark horse (X0/SG3/Z1)so, it's official: Xanadu is a twinkly fantasy we should indulge in more often and Showgirls is a steaming pile of crap.oh, and don't see Zardoz unless you want to burn your eyes out after 3 hours...
