a last hurrah before agatha-extraction: the simpsons

how much do i love a.o. scott?

“The Simpsons Movie” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has what the official advisory describes as “irreverent humor throughout” as well as brief cartoon nudity. Won’t somebody think of the children?

And torture porn horror movies are just one notch higher on the rating scale! Total bullshit.

When I want to figure out if a PG-13 movie is OK for my 7-year-old, I like to visit one of those stick-up-the-ass sites that catalogues every offense against delicate sensibilities. Like, the new Harry Potter movie? Under the category of "Imitative Behavior," they caution that there is one sighting of graffiti in the movie. Horrors! And some Potteresque name-calling. Oh noes! Yeah, so anyway, it gives me an idea if there's anything that would actually bother me. A character who possesses cleavage? One premarital kiss? A few bad words? Non-scary levels of cartoony violence? Okay. If things like prostitution, stabbing and gun violence, and strong sexual content are there, then no. We will be seeing the new Potter and the Simpsons movie. I was thinking Transformers was too violent, but my husband's coworker took his kids and was OK with it, so my husband wants to take our son now. And last year's crossword documentary? It had Teh Gay, and of course we were fine with that. That Adam Sandler movie in which he and the King of Queens guy fake being gay for insurance benefits? Well, that one demonstrates that it's normal to be squicked out by man-man kissing, and do I want to teach my kid any more homophobia than he picks up from other kids? No, ma'am. I'd have to get a gay man's stamp of approval on the movie before I'd take my kid to see it.

Aw man, I miss the movies.

I'll be thinking of you as you banish Agatha. If I had a candle to light for you, I would (oddly, there's no virgin of guadalupe candles here). All will be well.
